This painting demonstrates Bruno Liljefors’ almost scientific interest in the interaction between wildlife and its habitat. The plumage of a partridge has markings that make it difficult to spot the bird among ground vegetation. This camouflage effect makes it harder for predators such as hawks and foxes to see them. Liljefors was influenced by Charles Darwin’s ideas about how a species’ ability to adapt to the environment is important to its survival.
