This painting tells the story of the learned Bishop Fénelon. He comforted a poor peasant family, who had had a cow stolen from them. On his way from their house, the bishop found the animal and, although it was already dusk, returned it to its grateful owners. Hersent had been trained in classicist history painting by his teacher Regnault, but chose subjects from more modern times, often, as here, with a moral.
