Jean-Baptiste Le Prince travelled to Russia in 1756. There he painted picturesque rural subjects, among other things. The costumes worn by the guests at the inn are typical of different ethnic groups, such as Tartars, Russians, Cossacks, Finns, Turks and Georgians. He also used sketches he had made in Russia as the basis for paintings after his return to Paris in 1763. This painting was shown at the 1769 Paris Salon.
