Johan Fredrik Martin received his first artistic training with his brother Elias in London, going on to study with the engraver Francesco Bartolozzi. It was as a printmaker that he made a name for himself, first in collaboration with his brother and later in Sweden as an independent artist. Picturesque views were one of his specialities. It was in such a setting that Elias Martin painted his brother with his portfolio at his side.
