In the 1700s, the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris had the monopoly on life drawing. There, it was also part of “the painted torso competition” that the students could take part in. The entries were judged on not only representation of the model’s body but also facial expression and character depiction. The idea was that the drawings could also be used in a larger dynamic composition with mythological, historical or religious motifs.
