In the 1710s, artist Antoine Watteau created his own melancholic interpretation of the pastoral dream of Paradise. His paintings depict elegant groups of people, often in theatrical attire, making their way through parkland, conversing and courting. His portrayals of an idealised pastoral life have been given the French term fête galante, which hints at an erotic content.
