Inspired by Géricault, French 19th century artists took an interest in anatomical studies of dead humans and animals. Many of these paintings combine scientific observation with a horrified relish for the morbid subject matter. The fascination for anatomy, death and decay was also noticed in other forms of contemporary culture. The painting is by one of the artists in Géricault’s circle who embraced this theme.
