    The great simplicity that infuses this motif of a potted plant was the reason why this painting was long thought to be a piece by Jean-Siméon Chardin. It is now ascribed to the lesser-known artist Roland Delaporte. It is a tropical plant in the genus Justicia, which the artist probably saw in the Jardin des Plantes in Paris.
