The famous round temple in Tivoli on its rocky outcrop has been a popular subject for landscape painters ever since the Renaissance. When François Boucher returned to Paris in 1731, following three years in Rome, he painted a sort of fantasies known as capricci. He based the topography on his own sketches but borrowed animals, people and picturesque details from drawings by Abraham Bloemart (1566-1651) and other Dutch artists.
