Laurits Andersen Ring frequently depicted the landscape and life in the Danish countryside. When he painted The Lineman, he had not yet been to France, which did not prevent him from using the silvery, misty atmosphere often connected with the Scandinavian artists who had travelled there. The artist also derived indirect inspiration from contemporary French art for his realistic motifs, like this one.
