When the landscape painter Elias Martin returned from England in 1780 he was hired, oddly enough, to paint scenes from Gustav III’s public life. One of the subjects the king commissioned over the next few years was the christening of the Duke of Småland in Slottskyrkan, in 1782. Despite Martin’s inability to represent figures proportionally, Gustav III evidently appreciated his evocative style of painting.
