Fahlcrantz dominated Swedish landscape painting during the first half of the 19th century. He painted landmarks throughout the country, for example on behalf of Karl XIV Johan, who wanted to showcase his kingdom in pictures. Artists often made things easy for themselves composing according to old models. Vattenfall, Älvkarleby, however, is one of his more original paintings and seems based on the idea that nature should be portrayed truthfully.
