Lime burning is a traditional process in the production of lime used, for example, in creating mortar. The basic material is limestone which is plentiful on the island of Gotland where lime has been manufactured since the 17th century. Large-scale production of lime for the cement industry is responsible for much of the world’s release of carbon dioxide.
