Bougival lies on the river Seine, just west of Paris. In the 1870s, many Impressionists found scenes for their paintings here. Alfred Sisley was one of the more prominent artists in this group. The modern era features frequently in their pictures – railroads, factories and steamboats. Sisley’s painting from Bougival, however, shows no telltale signs of modernity, with the exception of one detail: the woman in the boat wearing a yellow hat perhaps suggests that the region has become a popular and fashionable destination for Sunday outings.
