Studies from a live model were fundamental at all art academies, including in Copenhagen. When Constantin Hansen painted this naked young man in 1826, he transformed the academy model into a Greek shepherd with a flute, sitting on the remains of an antique temple. The motif can be associated with Arcadia and the idea of a lost Paradise. The artist hoped to win a gold medal with this disguised portrait but had to wait for nine years.
