Amanda Sidvall belonged to the first class of female students admitted to the newly established Ladies’ Department at the art academy in Stockholm in 1864. In the 1870s, she traveled to Paris to continue her education at the private Académie Julian. Probably during her stay in the French capital, Sidvall painted this study of a female model wearing a fashionable and elegant plumed hat.
