There is an immediacy to the way Eva Bonnier has captured the shimmering blue light falling on the sculpture of the young boy. Several paintings by her from Paris depict her studio, but in the others she makes her own art invisible by showing all the canvases turned to face the wall. As with many other women artists of this period, there is a denial in Bonnier’s work of her own role as an artist. She eventually gave up painting altogether.
