Marstrand’s portrait of his teacher Eckersberg shows an unusual empathy. It was painted in May–June 1836, when Marstrand had heard that he had been awarded a two-year travel stipend from the Fund for Public Purposes, enabling him to study in Italy. This would not have been possible without Eckersberg’s support.
