Gustaf Wilhelm Palm was one many Nordic artists who long dreamed of travelling to Italy. He is a fine example of how the encounter with southern landscapes could have a liberating effect on creative activities. At home in Sweden Palm had shown talent, but in Italy he became a true master in the art of transforming his experiences into studies like this one, often painted in the space of just a few yours yet with razor-sharp depictions of light and atmosphere.
