The alderman and bailiff Matthijs Pompe is shown with his second wife and his daughter from his first marriage. Their mansion is seen in the background. The father is portrayed as a gentleman and a hunter on his own grounds, an occupation reserved for the nobility. There was a long tradition of group portraits in the Netherlands. The elegant style resembles the style developed by the Dutch painter Anthonis van Dyck when he was a court painter in England.
