Veronica Heiss’ portrait is one of the finest examples of how Zorn, just by intimating something, can make the beholder experience a whole wealth of things in the background. It is not clear whether we are looking at a woven tapestry or a Japanese lacquered screen, but this is hardly of any importance. Even if the portrait was not intended to be anything other than a portrait, it makes one think of mythological portrayals of women from this period by Edvard Munch and Franz von Stuck.
