In the 1870s and 1880s, many artists in France devoted themselves to portraying working environments. This made an impression on the Swedes and influenced their creativity. Nils Kreuger found his own niche. He specialized in horses, primarily work horses intended for carriages or ploughs, or horses in a village street, like in this painting.
