Prince Eugen was attracted to evocative landscape scenes early in his career. “Everything is so simple and grand in the twilight” he wrote in a letter to his friend, the author Helena Nyblom. He painted several versions of this scene from Balingsta Manor near Huddinge. This particular version from spring 1891 shows a grove of slender trees on a peaceful spring day just as the buds are opening.
