Carle Vanloo was Jean-Baptiste’s younger brother. He was even more successful as a court painter and became Director of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris. In his portrait of the mayor of Paris (prévôt des marchands) Michel-Étienne Turgot, he has eloquently captured an influential official, who views us with a slightly ironic gaze. Turgot clearly made his mark in Paris, and a famous isometric map of the city from the 1730s is named after him.
