Old Norse mythology was part of a culture whose geographical area stretched further than today’s Scandinavian boundaries. Accordingly, Old Norse subjects became popular throughout much of northern Europe. One notable example of this was Richard Wagner who composed operas with Norse themes. Here the Austrian painter Hans Makart has depicted how one of the Valkyries collects a dying warrior from the battlefield and deposits him in the world of the gods.
