Carl Gustaf Tessin is shown in a cuirass, but he had never been an officer. The portrait should therefore be seen symbolically, as an image of Tessin’s heroic efforts to save Sweden in the ongoing war with Russia. In Paris he had negotiated a mutual assistance agreement with France to strenghten Sweden politically and militarily. Perhaps it was his way of projecting himself as the strong man of Sweden. Six years later he became prime minister.
