Ariadne’s ball of thread that Theseus had unrolled enabled him to retrace his steps and find his way out of the labyrinth in Knossos after killing the Minotaur. Ariadne escaped with the hero but was abandoned on Naxos, possibly at the behest of Dionysus, the wine god, who had chosen Ariadne as his bride. Many artists have portrayed their first meeting as a fantastic feast set in an Arcadian landscape.
