This portrait is possibly of Gustav III’s younger siblings, Fredrik Adolf and Sofia Albertina. It is an unfinished work, with details defined to varying degrees. There is a lightness and a gaiety here reminiscent of work by e g Nicolas Lancret. Inspiration for the central dancing couple may indeed have come from Lancret’s La Camargo Danse, now at the National Gallery in Washington. Marie-Anne Cupis de Camargo was a star at the Paris Opera Ballet.
