In their endeavours to paint realistically artists sought out for instance different settings that could be considered genuine. Rural scenes became very popular. The Swedes followed the example of the French painter Jules Bastien-Lepage, who rendered the simple and often demanding lives with great accuracy, often with the help of photographic originals. Here Ernst Josephson has done the same and captured an everyday scene in which a few women have stopped to chat.
