Homeland Tunes can be seen as a sort of farewell from Zorn to the Swedish art scene. He donated the painting to Sweden’s Nationalmuseum on his 60th anniversary. The expression of the model and the large scale of the work is more elevated than many similar earlier motifs. Many people considered Zorn rather old-fashioned but he never lost his own faith in his work. Perhaps the notably serious layout of the painting is a way of emphasizing this.
