One of Per Krafft the Younger’s earliest and finest portraits depicts François-Emmanuel Guignard, later the comte de Saint-Priest. While fleeing the French Revolution he met Gustav III in Aachen, later speaking on his behalf in St. Petersburg for Sweden and Russia’s joint intervention in France. On his way home he spent a short period in Stockholm in 1795, where his portrait was painted by the just 18-year-old Per Krafft.
