The painting shows a source near Ornans, France, in the area where Courbet came from. The way in which Courbet has depicted nature demonstrates his rational technique that enabled him to work fast. Some of the vegetation appears to have been painted using simple brush imprints, but this also creates a sharp image of the whole scene. Note the woodcutter in the upper section of the canvas; he is important in conveying the scale of the painting.
