Alexandre Calame specialized in painting the Swiss Alps. In this painting he has captured a mountain area in Valais in overcast weather. His work was widely distributed and helped shape the image of Switzerland. Calame was very important for Swedish landscape painting as a teacher of Edvard Bergh, who in turn taught at Konstakademien in Stockholm.
