Elisabeth Friederike Sophie was the daughter of Margrave Fredrick of Brandenburg-Bayreuth and Princess Wilhelmine of Prussia, sister of Frederick the Great. She married Duke Charles Eugene of Württemberg. Due to his repeated infidelity and his choice to align with Prussia’s enemies in the Seven Years’ War, they lived separately following her return to Bayreuth in 1756. This portrait, dated 1762, was painted during the artist’s stay in Bayreuth.
