The landscape around Rome played an important part in the emergence of plein-air painting. Here, Camille Corot, working directly from nature, has painted dramatic rocky cliffs with a river in the foreground, bathed in bright sunlight. The colours are placed in patches side by side, with no transitions. Corot regarded this type of painting as working material for more finished versions done in the studio.
