Marieschi created imaginary architectural landscapes based on real places, but exaggerated the scale or combined elements of different locations to his own liking. The Renaissance palaces in these companion paintings appear to be huge – an impression reinforced by the small figures shown against a background of enormous arches. Marieschi also painted real cityscapes, primarily views of Venice.
