Saints are often depicted with objects that refer to their lives and enable them to be identified. The open book reminds us that Jerome, a Father of the Church, made the first Latin translation of the Bible. The knotted rope and cross symbolise his time of penance in the desert. The cardinal’s hat reflects his high position in the Church, although it is somewhat strange as in the 4th century, when Jerome was alive, cardinals had yet to be appointed.
