Cézanne was one of the Impressionists, and he showed his work at their first exhibition in 1874. His paintings were different, however, from the sketchy momentary images of the other artists in the group. Cézanne was more interested in the architectonic structure of a picture, and his paintings influenced the Cubists in the early 1900s. This scene from the Oise Valley north of Paris is typical of Cézanne’s way of composing landscapes. The view across the valley is framed by trees and branches.
