The river landscape stretches away in a silvery-grey light, amidst lush vegetation. The plein-air painter Hill had been influenced by the panorama and by photography. He painted this scene in the vast Forest of Fontainebleau, thirty minutes’ train ride from Paris. Here, footpaths had been created for tourists and walkers, with numerous viewpoints. Recreation was an important part of the modern middle-class lifestyle.
