Gustaf Rydberg often used small canvases that were easy to transport and stand on an easel outdoors. He was active mainly in Skåne, and lake Ringsjön in the summer was a view he painted frequently. The few, transparent layers of paint and the clouds captured with rapid, expert brush strokes indicate that this painting was more or less completed in one outdoor session.
