Carl Wilhelmson came into contact with Gauguin’s painting when he travelled to France. Later he was to paint Bohuslän in a way that resembles Gauguin’s renderings of Brittany and Arles. He painted the landscape and its population in bright colours and in situations that often depicted a resolute and highly religious way of life. The surface of Wilhelmson’s painting is matte and looks dry, as if to make it look as if it has been exposed to sunlight and salt winds.
