Berndt Lindholm was one of the Finnish artists who were initially inspired by French realism and then applied it to Nordic subjects. He worked in Gothenburg from 1876, becoming curator at the city museum. He often depicted the landscapes of the Swedish west coast in paintings that are clearly rooted in French realism. In this painting, he worked with a diagonal composition and a high horizon, which was characteristic of the French realist artists.
