Erik XIV belonged to the second generation of Vasa kings on the Swedish throne and was the first to receive a princely education. He was well aware of how art could be used in the service of royal power. In the portraits, the different roles of were shown, for example, as commander. Erik XIV's armour is not only war material but also an example of excellent craftsmanship. The baton in the king's hand and the sword imply military achievements.
