Hans Frederik Gude started out as a landscape painter in a grand, Nordic nationalist tradition. Although he had an ability to revitalize his painting over the decades, and Sandviksfjorden is a good example of that. The motif is related to his grand scenes from Norway but the grandness lies in the beauty of the light and atmosphere rather than in the scenery itself.
