Crown Prince Gustav, the future Gustav III, arrived in Paris with his youngest brother, Duke Frederick Adolf, on 4 February 1771. Amongst a busy schedule of events, the princes sat for Roslin in the mornings. Although their visit was cut short, the artist had time to make studies of their faces. These then formed the basis for several head-and-shoulders portraits, as well as for Roslin’s large painting of the three brothers.
