The painting depicts the moment when the heroine in Orvar Odd’s saga receives her betrothed’s ring after he has been killed in battle. Ingeborg’s heart was ‘then riven by grief’ and the two lovers were placed in the same burial mound. Nationalmuseum’s collection includes many examples of how 19th-century historical painting was not just about war and violence, but also depicted individual women’s lives.
