At the time this portrait was painted the Ottoman Empire had sent an ambassador to Paris, leading to a fashion inspired by Turkish style and customs, a “mode à la turque”. The marquise, who was a friend of Carl Gustaf Tessin’s wife, wanted to be portrayed in such “disguise”. Tessin arranged the loan of what was perceived to be a sultana’s costume from the prominent actor Charles-François Racot de Grandval.
