This portrait was commissioned by Jensen’s patron, Professor Peter Oluf Brøndsted, and painted in London in 1838. Charles Robert Cockerell (1788–1863), architect of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, was one of several scholarly friends of the Anglophile Brøndsted whom Jensen was asked to paint, but this is one of his finest portraits. It used to belong to the painter Laurits Tuxen.
