Starting in 1839, Eckersberg arranged a private academy with a woman model for the summer months when the light was considered particularly good. Thanks to the painter's meticulous diary entries, it is known who both the models and the students were and which summer. The model in this study was called Florentine and was hired in the summers of 1840 and 1841.
