Furnaces and smithies were and recurring theme for Pehr Hilleström. Depicting work in which fire was a vital element provided the artist with the potential for effectful lighting and settings. He skilfully captures the white light of the copper foundry and the warmer light of the anchor smithy. In both works, drama and movement are created through the workers’ silhouettes and the shadows they cast in the light of the furnaces.
